About Ironlight

An independent publishing house built on one conviction: a book should be made to last.

LightThe idea, and what a finished book gives back to the world.

IronSubstance. The editing, the design and the making.

ForgeThe moment the two meet, and a manuscript becomes a book.

EndureAn unbroken ring. Work made to last beyond its season.

The house

Ironlight Publishing develops, edits, designs, produces and distributes books across fiction, nonfiction and books for young readers, for first-time and established authors alike. We take on a limited number of books at a time, so every title carrying our mark receives the full attention of the house, from the first conversation to the last reprint.

The name

Iron is what lasts. Light is what a good book gives off. Our mark sets the two together: a sun rising over an anvil, the moment an idea meets the work of shaping it.

How we work

We work closely with a small circle of authors and specialists: editors, designers, illustrators and narrators chosen for each book rather than assigned by rota. Our authors work with us from wherever they live. The work happens in the manuscript, not in an office.

What we believe

Good books are made, not merely printed. They are edited with rigor and designed with respect for the reader. And once a book is out in the world, it deserves a publisher that keeps showing up for it.

Five things we hold to

  1. Read everything. Every inquiry, every manuscript, every page. Nothing is judged from a query letter.
  2. The voice stays the author's. Editing makes the book more itself, never more like us.
  3. Design is not decoration. A cover has one job at thumbnail size and another on a shelf. Both get done.
  4. Every format, first time. Print, ebook and audio are planned together, not bolted on.
  5. Launch is the beginning. Metadata, retailer pages and the author's presence are kept alive long after publication day.
